Becoming Irish via Grandparents or Parents

The Foreign Births Register allows individuals born outside of Ireland to claim Irish citizenship through descent. You may be eligible if:

• One of your grandparents was born in Ireland, or
• One of your parents was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth, even if they were not born in Ireland

In these cases, you can apply for Irish citizenship by registering your birth in the Foreign Births Register.

Once your name is entered on the Foreign Births Register, you are officially an Irish citizen and can apply for an Irish passport.
